We are thrilled to welcome Turner Classic Movies host Alicia Malone as this year’s honoree of the Lou DiCrescenzo Cinematic Arts Award. She will join us in person as we showcase nine classic films from the archival vaults of national institutions like the Library of Congress, the UCLA Film & Television Archive, the George Eastman Museum, and more. Each feature is accompanied with an introduction and an era-appropriate pre-show of vintage snipes, trailers, and shorts. The last day of the festival kicks off with a stunning 35mm showing of UNDERWORLD presented with a live original score from renowned accompanist Ben Model.  

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲: This gritty, silent crime drama ignited the gangster genre and made a name for its then-unknown director Josef von Sternberg. George Bancroft is “Bull” W**d, an unforgiving kingpin who rules the crime world in Prohibition-era Chicago. When a rival makes the moves on his girl, “Bull” W**d goes to violent lengths to get revenge. Visually stunning with dazzling montages, experimental POV shots, and innovative chiaroscuro lighting, it is no surprise von Sternberg got his start as a projectionist!
